Simple Summer Rhythms: Finding Family Balance During Summer Break

Updated: Jun 14

Summer break brings an exciting change of pace, but for many Worthington families, it can also feel a bit overwhelming. With school out of session, routines shift, kids are home more, and many parents try to balance quality family time with busy work schedules.

As both a parent and a candidate for School Board, I know the importance of rest—but also the value of intentional moments that nurture learning, connection, and calm.

Here are a few simple ways to help your family find balance this summer:

1️⃣ Build Meaningful Mini-Traditions

You don’t need elaborate plans to create lasting memories. Start small:

  • A weekly “neighborhood walk night”

  • Thursday ice cream runs

  • Backyard evening story times

  • Friday movie nights under the stars

These small rituals create structure and joy.

2️⃣ Let Your Kids Lead

Ask your kids: What would you like to do this summer?Whether it's baking, planting a garden, building LEGOs, or exploring the metro parks, kids take pride in having ownership of activities—and learn along the way.

3️⃣ Infuse Gentle Learning

Summer doesn’t have to be a learning gap. Everyday activities offer natural moments to keep minds sharp:

  • Cooking = Math & Science (our daughter LOVES to cook with us!)

  • Nature walks = Science & Observation

  • Library days = Literacy & Discovery

  • Journaling or drawing = Creativity & Writing

4️⃣ Protect Adult Time, Too

Parents need rest. Be intentional about protecting your time and boundaries. Swap playdates, plan coffee meet-ups with friends, or schedule that long-postponed date night. A rested parent models balance and self-care. And we show up better when we're well rested.

5️⃣ Make Room for Mental Health

Summer is also an ideal time to check in on everyone’s emotional well-being. Make space for open conversations about feelings, and watch for signs that children (and parents) may need a little extra care or support. Don’t hesitate to explore resources available through your employer, insurance, healthcare provider, or local community programs.

🌿 Summer Is An Opportunity

Summer doesn’t have to be jam-packed or stressful. Even simple moments—rooted in connection, curiosity, and care—can help nurture lifelong learning and emotional resilience for your children.

Wishing all Worthington families a safe, joyful, and balanced summer ahead.
